Adidas and Parley for the Oceans take a stand against plastic pollution

Published
Dec 8, 2015

At the Parley Talks in Paris on Tuesday Adidas and Parley for the Oceans showcased an innovative footwear concept to raise awareness against the plastic pollution of the oceans, and to show the fashion industry the kind of sustainable solutions that are available.

The shoe's midsole was 3D-printed using recylced polyester - adidas

The shoe, unveiled at a press conference on the occasion of COP21, features an upper made with retrieved plastic from the ocean and a 3D-printed midsole produced using recycled polyester.

“World leaders forging an agreement is wonderful, but we shouldn’t need to be told to do the right thing,” said Eric Liedtke, Adidas Group Executive Board member. “The industry can't afford to wait for instructions any longer. Together with the network of Parley for the Oceans we have started taking action and creating new sustainable materials and innovations for athletes. The 3D-printed Ocean Plastic shoe midsole stands for how we can set new industry standards if we start questioning the reason to be of what we create.”

Adidas has been working with the environmental organization Parley to raise awareness on the issue of plastic debris in the oceans since April 2015. As part of its commitment, the sports group has begun to phase out the use of plastic bags in its own retail stores, and promised to end the addition of plastic micro-beads across all its body care products by December 31st, 2015.
