Asics snaps up tracking app Runkeeper

The wave of fitness apps acquisitions by sports companies is not over. The latest label to follow the trend is Asics, which announced on Friday the purchase of tracking app Runkeeper for an undisclosed sum.

It follows Adidas’ example, which snapped up Runtastic in 2015 for 220 million euros, and Under Armour, which bought Endomondo the previous year for 85 million.

The apps can track and record fitness activities such as running, walking and cycling through a GPS on smartphone devices.

With them, sporting goods companies aim to expand their offering and add services to their product lineup, which already include footwear, clothing and sports equipment.
