Carnaby and V&A to collaborate on Christmas installations

Published
Oct 6, 2016

Globally famous London destination Carnaby is collaborating with the V&A museum to create this year’s Christmas installations in the heart of London’s West End.

V&A's 'You Say You Want a Revolution? Records and Rebels 1966' exhibition - V&A

Inspired by the V&A’s new exhibition ‘You Say You Want a Revolution? Records and Rebels 1966-1970’, the installation will celebrate the fashion and cultural heritage of Carnaby Street during the late 1960s.

It will be displayed above the 13 streets of Carnaby, making it the largest ever Christmas display showcased in the area.

As part of the collaboration, the Victoria and Albert Museum has opened a pop-up shop on Carnaby Street, which is set to run until January. The space sells tickets to the exhibition as well as merchandise, including exclusive limited edition Levi’s jeans and a colourful silk scarf designed by Beatles illustrator Alan Aldridge.

Carnaby was the epicentre of fashion and music in the 1960s as youth culture thrived around the clothing boutiques on Carnaby Street. The lively style scene led Time Magazine famously name the street on its front cover as epitomising ‘Swinging London’.

“We are delighted to announce this prestigious partnership with the V&A. The major exhibition is a perfect synergy for us as it celebrates Carnaby’s rich heritage and stamp as a London icon. The Christmas installations are original, fun and a great signature for London,” said Simon Quayle, Director of Shaftesbury.

The Carnaby Christmas installations will be launched on Thursday 10 November between 5 and 9 pm with an experiential shopping event and lights switch on.
