Gosha Rubchinskiy links with Burberry, Stephen Jones and Adidas

Gosha Rubchinskiy has linked up with a trio of big names for his latest collection with Burberry, Stephen Jones and Adidas all working with the Russian designer and photographer for his spring/summer 2018 offer that was shown in St Petersburg on Sunday evening.

Gosha Rubchinskiy collaborated with Burberry for the SS18 collection

It’s the Burberry collaboration that really hit the headlines with Burberry’s Christopher Bailey being sat front row.

A selection of eight men's pieces were created with the items due to drop in-store next January. They included new interpretations of the Burberry trench coat and other coat styles such as an allover check Harrington jacket or a classic coat reinterpreted as a bi-colour piece.

Re-imagined in oversized shapes, they came along with allover check shirts, shorts and hats in an overall collection that was heavily influenced by football. Stephen Jones teamed up with Rubchinskiy to create all the hats for the collection.

It was an interesting move for Burberry which, earlier in its reinvention as a luxury fashion brand, was enthusiastically adopted by working class British football fans. With a raft of lower-priced product and plenty of counterfeits available, this was one factor that led to over-exposure for the Burberry check and a retreat by the brand from using it so prominently.

But the collaboration with Rubchinskiy is clearly a world away from this, even though the collection in toto was closely linked to footballing themes. The show was actually the second of three in Rubchinskiy’s ongoing collaboration with sports giant Adidas and looked at the intersection of football and rave culture (good timing given the Fifa World Cup takes place in Russia next year).

That meant roomy logo tees, football kits with Adidas written in Cyrillic, shorts, shell suits, vests, sweats, tie-dye pieces, buttoned-up short-sleeve shirts, checked and striped causal blazers and assorted baggy pants and jeans.
