The H&M Foundation is once again encouraging environmental innovation within the fashion industry, with the launch of the 2016 Global Change Award.

As of Thursday, the second edition of the award, which will see €1 million in grants handed to brands with bright ideas about how to make fashion greener, is open for applications. There are three separate categories: ‘Circular business models', covering ideas on how to reuse, repair, share, digitalize or extend the life of products, ‘Circular materials', looking for ideas on new fibers, recycling techniques, and leather substitutes and ‘Circular processes', focused on new methods.

Last year's winners included five brands championing ideas such as clothing made of citrus by-products, microbes that digest waste polyester, and an online marketplace for textile leftovers.

Applications will be open until October 31, and reviewed by an expert panel, including champion sailor Dame Ellen MacArthur, Italian Vogue Editor in Chief Franca Sozzani and supermodel Amber Valletta. A panel selection will take place from November 11 - March 27, 2017, at which point the vote will go to the public, closing on April 2, 2017 before an award ceremony on April 5.
