John Lewis’s 160,000 sq ft Edinburgh store will unveil a £24 million upgrade at the end of this month with the extensive works having been designed “to make it easier to shop”. The changes come ahead of major redevelopment at the St James Centre that store anchors.

This spring will see a revamped St James Centre John Lewis store in Edinburgh

Alongside a general reconfiguration of the store, the department stores retailer is adding an extra shopping floor, a new café and a new tech product area.

The company started revamp works at the location last year but it is only now that the extent of the changes have become clear. So far, the company has opened a new gift, stationery and candle shop at the main entrance on the ground floor, aded more parking spaces and boosted its click & collect functionality.

Most of the changes will be complete later this month and will include Beauty department being given a makeover and moved to a new, more central location on the second floor in line with the plan to make it easier to shop.

And on the new shopping floor on level five, the retailer will also introduce its new Smart Home concept to put its connected gadgets and tech into one space. It will be the first of the retailer's shops in Scotland to offer a Smart Home area. Alongside the Smart Home concept, a new electrical department will be unveiled, which will include a photography station with one of the widest ranges of cameras and accessories in the city.

The company is clearly hoping its new The Place to Eat café with a fresh, contemporary décor will become a destination that draws shoppers away from their screens and into the store. It has sited it on the new fifth floor offering a new vista of the historic city.

In August the changes will be complete with the opening of a new furniture department on the fourth floor, alongside the new lighting department and picture gallery.
