Nordstrom makes Fortune 100 list of best places to work

Great Place to Work has announced its 2017 Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For List. Nordstrom was the only apparel retailer to make the list.

Google took the number one spot. Nordstrom was the only clothing retailer to make the list, taking the number 94 spot.

The list was made based on the feedback of over 232,000 employees from Great Place to Work Certified companies. Great Place to Work listed its criteria, stating “Through the Trust Index©, employees anonymously assess their workplace, including the honesty and quality of communication by managers, degree of support for employees' personal and professional lives, and the authenticity of relationships with colleagues. Results from the survey are highly reliable, having a 95% confidence level and a margin of error of 5% or less."

87% of Nordstrom employees were proud to tell others they worked at Nordstrom, while 85% of employees surveyed said the facilities contribute to a good working environment.  This is the fourth year in a row that Nordstrom has made the list, although its ranking has steadily fallen from 89 to 94 over the past four years.

There are a number of reasons Nordstrom has been one of the only companies in the apparel sector to even grace the list. Firstly, Nordstrom puts a focus on work-life balance through a number of programs, like telecommute options, compressed workweeks, flexible schedule, and job sharing.

The company also offers expansive programs to new parents. Nordstrom reimburses employees for adoption expenses and employees receive a Nordstrom gift card to help them purchase baby expenses.

For day to day living, employees receive transit subsidiaries, subsidized lunch on a daily basis, free snacks,  fitness classes, and even dry cleaning and banking services.
