Opening Ceremony debuts a capsule collection honoring Fruits and a Comme des Garçons pop-up

Opening Ceremony is bringing a double dose of Japanese style to its New York City store. The boutique is offering a capsule collection honoring the beloved Harajuku style magazine Fruits, which will be closing production after 20 years capturing Japanese street style. At the same time, it will be hosting a special pop-up of Australian vintage store Dot Comme, which specializes in pieces from Comme des Garcon’s archives.

The pop-up and collaboration will be a rare opportunity for North American shoppers to get a glimpse of both Japanese street wear and avant-garde fashion. On the more accessible side is the Fruits collaboration, which includes T-shirts and hoodies stamped with classic graphics from the magazine. Opening Ceremony will also be selling copies of the edgy Japanese magazine for as low as $20, but just 100 issues will be available. Photographer Shoichi Aoki founded Fruits in 1997, and according to Opening Ceremony’s founder Humberto Leon, the magazine “is a true time capsule of Japanese street fashion.”

The Dot Comme pop up meanwhile will showcase pieces from Rei Kawakubo’s career at Comme des Garcons. Dot Comme’s founder Otto la Rosa collaborated with Opening Ceremony to curate 250 items, which will sell for $200 to $1,000 a piece.

The Dot Comme installation will transfer to Opening Ceremony’s LA shop on May 25. For those who can’t get to the boutique itself but want a taste of Fruit’s style, Opening Ceremony’s Leon interviewed Aoki about the magazine’s history and influence for the boutique’s website.
