German perfumery and cosmetics retailer Douglas has published the results for the fiscal year 2016-17, closed on 30th September, recording a revenue of €2.8 billion, up 3.2% over the previous year. In the same period, EBITDA rose 5%, reaching €354 million. Online sales were one of Douglas' main growth drivers, leaping 18% to approximately €383 million, and now account for nearly 14% of the group's total revenue.

The German domestic market remains Douglas' largest, generating a revenue of €1.18 billion. It was followed by France, where Douglas operates as the parent company of cosmetics retailer Nocibé, acquired in 2014, and where the group generated a revenue of €743 million, equivalent to a 5.2% rise.

In the last fiscal year, the German group was very active with acquisitions both in Spain and Italy. After buying Italian perfumery chains Limoni and La Garderia last May, Douglas recently bought Spanish group Perfumerias If, which operates 102 stores. A year earlier, Douglas had bought another Spanish retail chain, Bodybell. Following this spate of acquisitions, the German group is now the foremost beauty retailer in both Italy and Spain, having taken over an estimated €500 million worth of retail sales, generated by nearly 700 stores.

Last September, Douglas appointed Tina Müller as CEO, and currently operates 1,900 stores in 19 countries. It also claims 27 million loyalty card holders in Europe, having grown this number by 7%. Cardholders buy more often than other consumers, and on average they spend 10% more than other Douglas customers.
