After a few patchy weeks, John Lewis finally started to see the benefits of the late Easter and warmer weather in the seven days to April 8 as sales rose 3.5% to £82 million.

The weather proved a boost for fashion, with sales up 7.5%. Warm weather clothing was up significantly, with womenswear rising 14.2% and menswear 8%. Fashion accessories were also strong with an 18.2% rise, driven by sunglasses sales.

And in a great example of how added extras can boost fashion sales, the company said that its new And/Or denim lifestyle range performed well on the back of its personalisation denim workshop, running at its Oxford Street flagship until April 18.

But it wasn’t all good news. In Home, turnover was down 2.9% as sales of larger items were impacted by the warmer weather, although outdoor living was up an impressive 92.3% as the warm sunshine at the start of the school Easter holidays reminded householders that their gardens needed a boost.

Comparable sales of Easter-related gift food were up 9.1% with the Prestat Gin & Tonic Easter egg and its Chocolate Hen on edible grass two best sellers.

Electricals and home tech also did well with a 6.9% rise as new products drove sales. The launch of the new Google Home sparked particular interest, while tablets/computing was up 13.3%, and audio/connected home was up 6.7%.
