Thousands of Saks customers' personal information leaked

Saks Fifth Avenue’s customer database was leaked this past weekend, releasing the personal information of thousands of Saks Fifth Avenue customers.

The phone numbers, email addresses, and names of tens of thousands of customers who signed up for Saks’ online wait list for out-of-stock products were released in plain text on Saks Fifth Avenues' website. Saks website lets customers log on via an unencrypted connection, leaving the site susceptible to hackers and leaks.

Along with the email addresses and phone numbers, the product codes for customer’s purchases, as well as the date and time of purchases and several IP addresses were released.

Buzzfeed News spoke with a spokesman for Hudson’s Bay Company, Saks Fifth Avenue’s owner, “We take this matter seriously. We want to reassure our customers that no credit, payment, or password information was ever exposed. We are moving quickly and aggressively to resolve the situation, which is limited to a low single-digit percentage of email addresses. We have resolved any issue related to customer phone numbers, which was an even smaller percent.” Hudson’s Bay Company maintains Saks Fifth Avenue’s e-commerce site.
