Vanessa Friedman joins the New York Times

Published
Mar 12, 2014

Long time Financial Times fashion editor Vanessa Friedman has been named fashion director and critic at the New York Times, filling the dual roles Cathy Horyn and Suzy Menkes who recently left the company. Friedman will head up fashion content at the New York Times, the International New York Times (formerly the International Herald Tribune) as well as for the publication’s online platform. She will also play an important role in the New York Times luxury conference which will be held in Miami in December.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Vanessa to the Times. She is the perfect journalist to be our leading voice on global fashion,” said executive editor Jill Abramson, in a statement.

Vanessa Friedman was the first fashion editor at Financial Times, a position that she has held since 2003. Prior to that, she was the founding features and fashion director for InStyle UK and a regular contributor to The Economist, The New Yorker and Vogue. A replacement has yet to be named.

The New York Times is part of the New York Times Company, which is quoted on the NYSE.
