North Vancouver-based, Arc’teryx Equipment on Tuesday debuted its Voltair avalanche airbag, an advanced airbag backpack technology designed to keep wearers at the snow’s surface during an avalanche. The airbag reduces burial depth and increases survival rate.
Airbag backpacks are statistically proven to increase the survival rate of skiers and snowboarders caught in an avalanche. The Voltair airbag system is powered by a 22.2V Lithium-Ion Polymer rechargeable battery that allows the user to deploy the air bag multiple times, unlike the traditional compressed air cylinder system that deploys only once per charge. In addition, the airbag is fully seam-sealed with a waterproof nylon ripstop body fabric and WaterTight zippers.
The Voltair system also delivers more initial pressure than any other battery powered avalanche airbag system ensuring that the balloon deploys consistently and continuously despite small tears and punctures.
The Voltair airbag will be available in 20L and 30L volume in fall 2016.
