Berliner Mode Salon dominates last fashion week day

The Berliner Mode Salon and the adjacent Vogue Salon shone on the last day of Berlin Fashion Week, showcasing over 40 designer brands and their Spring/Summer 2018 collections at Kronprinzenpalais and its back gardens. The showcases invited guests to get up close with the collections and presented Berlin’s most exciting designer labels.

For fashion professionals, visiting the collective showcase is a must, as many designers who didn’t get to hold a fashion show presented here their latest offerings. Details can be better spotted on models or dummies than on the runway, and designers are immediately available for questions.

The line-up included well-established Berlin-based brands such as Michael Sontag, Antonia Goy and Dawid Tomaszewski, as well as emerging talent and German powerhouses including Talbot Runhof, Roeckl, Strenesse and Hugo Boss.

The importance of the Berliner Mode Salon as an alternative to other traditional fashion week events was determined by Hugo Boss’ presence. In its sixth season, the trade fair managed to have the luxury German brand under its roof, breaking a six-year hiatus from the Metzingen-brand. Boss presented a show in the former St.Agnes church on Thursday and its womenswear collections were on display at the showcase.

The last day of the Berlin Fashion Week also saw traditional catwalk shows take place. Vladimir Karaleev opened the schedule in the morning with his Spring/Summer 2018 collection, a series of deconstructed and reinterpreted garments. In addition to asymmetric lines and layered silhouettes, details like pockets and zippers in black contrasted with the pastel and nude tones of the collection, creating a clean look. Silk and linen were mixed with chiffon for an easy summer outfit.

The narrative continued into the night with Marina Hoermanseder and Michael Sontag. The Austrian fashion designer showed her Spring/Summer 2018 collection at a construction site in Humboldtforum’s courtyard.

It rained heavily until shortly before her show, forcing guests and models alike to avoid puddles. The models had already struggled with their footwear in the past seasons, and this season the difficulty level was increased with huge puddles and an extra-long catwalk. In the end, a rainbow graced the sky after the thunderstorm.

Hoermanseder sent models down the runway wearing massive leather buckles and bustiers, combined with jeans and a Russian flavour. The collection’s hero piece was a Matryoshka outfit.

The city was dry by the time the last catwalk show of the season was held. The audience was happy to see that Michael Sontag focused again on what he does best, the garment that launched his career: silk dresses. They were presented in bright colours alongside trousers, tops, leather coats and light jackets, giving Fashion Week Berlin the grand finale it deserved.
