For its 40th anniversary in March 2018, denim label Closed has gone back to its roots. The German jeans specialist, based in Hamburg since 1990, has in fact signed a collaboration with French designer François Girbaud, creating a functional collection for men and women using innovative fabrics.

Closed and François Girbaud celebrate the German label's 40th anniversary - Closed

"The Closed and François Girbaud collection is ideal for a modern, active lifestyle, featuring reversible jackets, short sport jackets, denim overalls and a women's trench coat," wrote the label.

Denim expert François Girbaud is passionate about fabrics. He founded ÇA in 1968 with Marithé Girbaud, positioning it at the premium end of the jeans market. Following a lawsuit over the company name, ÇA was renamed Closed in 1978, before being bought in 1990 by German businessmen Hans Leplow and Günther Giers. Nowadays, the company is led by Gordon Giers, Günther's son, with Til Nadler and Hans Redlefsen.

They decided to pay tribute to the brand's roots with this collection designed by François Girbaud. Rather than relying on denim, the collection is distinctive for the items' construction and unique materials, addressing the needs of contemporary urban consumers always on the go.

"The t-shirts' reflective bands and printed motifs glow in the dark, providing added security and an unexpected twist, wrote Closed in the press release. Functional items are manufactured using innovative fabrics, with vertical stretch panels to facilitate movement. Pockets have been cleverly cut and positioned, and there are a series of compartments to hold the sort of flat devices that are indispensable these days."

The collection will be available at the label's 47 European stores and on the Closed website.
