Crowngate shopping centre to get £1.5m makeover

The Crown Estate has been granted planning permission to transform a part of Worcester’s Crowngate shopping centre with an £1.5 million investment.

Currently housing national retail chains such as New Look, Mothercare, Bonmarché and USC, Crowngate’s Friary Walk is set to be revitalised with a new façade and main entrance, as well as new units.

With a more flexible range of uses, granted as part of the planning consent, the renovation of units aims to attract a mix of new businesses, retailers and restaurants, according to The Crown Estate. Additionally, the approved plans will complete the regeneration of Angel Place as a marketplace and public square, and enhance the character and appearance of the Historic City Conservation Area.  

“This important regeneration project... is a key part of our long-term vision to ensure Crowngate remains a leading shopping destination and will also help to preserve the character of the historic city. The regeneration will attract a more diverse mix of occupiers, enhancing what is already on offer at Friary Walk, as well as creating new job opportunities for the city of Worcester,” said Nicole Campbell, asset manager at The Crown Estate.

Crowngate shopping centre celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. The mall is visited by 13 million shoppers a year, and offers a mix of brands including Debenhams, Phase Eight, Animal, Gerry Weber, House of Fraser, The Body Shop and Primark.
