Denim Days celebrates all things indigo in New York

Published
Jun 6, 2019

New York Denim Days, the two-day festival dedicated to all things indigo is set to kick off on Saturday, boasting more than 75 exhibitors, as well as panels, shows, exhibits and shopping opportunities, all linked to the event’s theme: “Denim From The Ground Up”.

Now in its third year, New York Denim Days first launched in 2017 - Photo: Denim Days

The event, which takes place from June 8 to 9 at the Metropolitan Pavilion, counts Athleta, First Standard Co., 3x1, Triarchy and Garbage by Marta Goldschmied among its exhibiters, along with kidswear brand OshKosh B’gosh, a new participant at the festival.

The festival’s Denim Talks panel series presented by Advance Denim will cover a wide range of topics, opening with “Denim & The African Diaspora: A Legacy Untold” – moderated by Whitney McGuire, attorney for Creative Entrepreneurs and co-founder of Sustainable Brooklyn – and drawing to a close with a social media influencer panel entitled “Diverse Voices in Denim Influence”.

Presentations will also include the screening of a short film produced by 3x1 and a denim trend forecast for Fall/Winter 2020 and Spring/Summer 2021 hosted by Cotton Incorporated.

This program will be further complemented by two runway presentations. The first, a kids “Our Future in Denim” fashion show, will feature the latest trends from OshKosh B’gosh, Athleta Girl, Indi-Kids and Trico Fields, among others, on Saturday.

The second has been organized by the High School of Fashion and will be showcasing the best designs created by students as part of a contest to re-purpose a denim jacket on Sunday.

As usual, the festival will also be offering attendees a series of musical sets from a varied selection of performers including Cesar Garabini, DJ Mikey Post, Blac Rabbit and the Harlem Sing Choir.

Other activations at the event will include open-air morning yoga sessions, the 18th Street Vintage Denim Market, a rare sneaker exhibit and artistic installations from the likes of graphic and 3D artist Moon Heemin, artist and denim designer Anna Weber, and Shya Beth, who will be unveiling a series of equine sculptures made from recycled denim and Styrofoam.

New York Denim Days Festival is organized by Modefabriek and Kingpins Show, and sponsored by Tencel branded fibers by Lenzing.

The festival presents itself as a family event, admitting students and children up to the age of 12 free of charge. Standard tickets sell for $7 when booked online and can be bought for $10 at the door.
