Europe still top global cosmetics market in 2017

The European cosmetics and personal care market took in 77.6 billion euros in 2017, a slight increase compared to 77 billion euros in 2016, according to the European cosmetics federation, Cosmetics Europe.

Europe remains the premier global cosmetics market, ahead of the U.S., which accounted for 67.2 billion euros and China, at 43.4 billion euros in 2017. Germany, France and the UK were the top three markets in Europe, standing at 13.6 billion euros; 11.3 billion euros and 11.1 billion euros respectively.

Worth some 20.7 billion euros, personal care led the European market, followed by hygiene products, which account for 19.64 billion euros. The two major categories were followed by hair products, worth 14.84 billion euros, and fragrance, which accounted for 11.93 billion euros. Lastly, makeup saw out the European market ranks at 11.17 billion euros.

According to Cosmetics Europe, which recently elected to president Loïc Armand -- the vice president of L'Oréal, director of external affairs -- the value of European cosmetic exports in 2017 reached 20.2 billion euros, with France and Germany together representing half of total exports. 

On the labour market side, the European cosmetics industry both directly and indirectly generated two million jobs.
