Fashion sales dip in latest week at John Lewis

It would have been hard for John Lewis to match its Black Friday week performance in its latest seven-day period but it did a good job, although fashion had a tough time with sales in this directory falling.

The department stores and online retailer said Tuesday that its total sales rose 3.9% year-on-year in the week to December 3, a period that includes Cyber Monday. It took in revenue to £172.1m, short of the record almost-£200m it made the week before.

John Lewis struggled to match last week's performance in the latest seven days

Its growth was almost exclusively down to electricals, which rose 14.9% as the company made itself busy selling plenty of Sonos, Apple and Samsung devices.

But Fashion sales were down 2.3% compared to last year, as many of the promotions in the market in 2015 were concentrated around the Black Friday period. And Home sales were down 1.4%. But there were some bright spots hidden in that figure.

Furniture sales were up 7.7% as customers started to prepare for Christmas guests with inflatable beds up 116%, sofa beds up 36% and its bestselling pillow up 18% on last year.
