Hudson’s Bay bans fur

Published
Mar 25, 2023

Department store chain Hudson’s Bay announced this week that it no longer sells products made from animal fur.

Hudson’s Bay bans fur - Hudson’s Bay

The fur-ban touches Hudson’s Bay Company’s entire portfolio of brands including Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks Off 5th. The company first made the decision to go fur-free in 2021 and officially stopped selling the merchandise this month.

According to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the move follows emails from over 100,000 PETA supporters to Hudson’s Bay Company’s businesses and protests at its stores. In October 2020, there were demonstrations outside of nine Hudson’s Bay and Saks Fifth Avenue stores.

“Fur belongs on the animals who grew it, not on collars and coats,” said PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman. “Hudson’s Bay has come a long way from its fur-trading origins, and compassionate consumers and PETA are celebrating the company’s decision to join the vast majority of the fashion world in saying goodbye to the cruel fur industry.”

The Toronto-based Hudson’s Bay Company joins hundreds of top retailers and designers in banning fur, including Macy’s, Nordstrom, Calvin Klein, Chanel, Diane von Furstenberg, Hugo Boss, Jil Sander, Karl Lagerfeld, and Tommy Hilfiger

PETA is currently rallying the public to demand that LVMH follow suit.
