JD Sports new Merthyr Tydfil store to offer wider street and fashion range

Published

It might not be JD Sports’ biggest UK store (33rd-largest to be precise) but its new Wales flagship will see “significant improvement in trading space, affording the opportunity to attract additional footfall into the store”, the sports/leisure retail giant said Thursday.

The 8,345 sq ft space at the Cyfarthfa Retail Space in Merthyr Tydfil will provide “an enhanced product proposition for consumers” when it opens on 25 February. It expects the store to attract 3.6 million visitors a year.

“Reinforcing its status as the leading trainer and sports fashion retailer in the UK”, JD said it will “ensure local residents and shoppers alike are provided with their fix of all their favourite brands” including Nike Adidas, North Face and Under Armour.

However, the new store will also introduce a larger street/fashion range including extended collections from Hoodrich  and Mercier debuting for the first time in Wales. Also added to the mix will be Fred Perry, Lacoste, Boss, EA7 and Napapijri.

“The enhanced product proposition will be supported by improved store configuration and increased trading space, alongside improved back-of-house, staff welfare facilities and in-store serviceability. The new will also offer more local jobs for the community”, it added.

At launch, a JD-branded truck will be parked outside the new store, welcoming shoppers and providing free customisation with any footwear purchase across the weekend.

James Air, Head of Group Acquisitions at JD, said: “We are confident that the new store will be one of the best of its type within the UK.”
