Lenzing has reached a new milestone in its eco-responsible strategy. The Austrian cellulose fibres specialist has recently been awarded the 'Biobased' certificate for three of its products, acetic acid, furfural and magnesium, by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The certification programme is part of the USDA's 'BioPreferred' initiative, designed to encourage public institutions and private corporations to buy products that are more eco-responsible, or are predominantly made of ecological materials.
The award is yet another instance of Lenzing's eco-responsible approach, as it is not the first time that the Austrian group has won international recognition for its sustainable technology. A few months ago, Lenzing's Modal and Viscose fibres were also awarded a 'Biobased' certificate by the USDA, while the Tencel fibres earned their certificate as far back as 2011.

Bio certification has become crucial to Lenzing's expansion strategy. In 2015, The Austrian group unveiled 'sCore Ten', a new approach designed to make sustainable innovation the company's growth factor for future years, a strategy which is already having a positive impact.

At the end of March, Lenzing reported in fact that its EBIT has nearly doubled in 2016, thanks to the rise in fibre prices, a greater volume of sales, and also to the growth of its specialised textiles business.

The trend is not about to slow down, and at the end of 2019 Lenzing is planning to open in the USA the world's largest Tencel manufacturing plant, for a €276 million investment. The group's objective is very clear: to ensure that specialist fibres generate 50% of its business by 2020.
