NY's Museum at FIT opens its 'Global Fashion Capitals' exhibit

Published
Jun 3, 2015

The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology presents its latest art exhibition, Global Fashion Capitals, that takes an in-depth look at the rise of the world’s fashion cities. The exhibit will remain open from June 2nd to November 14th 2015.

The four major fashion cities, London, Milan, Paris and New York City are represented as well as emerging fashion cities including Seoul, Shanghai, Antwerp, St. Petersburg/Moscow, Madrid, Sydney/Melbourne, Mexico City, Berlin, Istanbul, Johannesburg, São Paulo, Mumbai and Stockholm.

The exhibit opens with a digital style map that features street style photos and runway images of the most current fashion trends from 20 fashion capitals. As many as 70 garments and accessories are on display in order of established capitals to emerging capitals and range as far back as 1890 with Charles Frederick Worth’s couture cape, to as recent as Lisa Folawiyo’s beaded fringe dress from this year. All of the pieces, many of which are by designers who have not been featured at the museum, are from the museum’s permanent collection.

On October 13th, the exhibit will be supplemented by a symposium that will be jointly hosted by The Museum at FIT and the City University of New York. This will consist of a fashion show featuring five designers from emerging fashion capitals and a panel discussion on the industry in various cities and the factors that shape fashion.

Some designers who will be featured include Christian Dior, Prada, Christopher Kane, Yohji Yamamoto, Nettie Rosenstein of New York, Carla Fernandez of Mexico City, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada of Madrid, Alexandre Herchcovitch of São Paulo, and Lie Sangbong of Seoul.
