New York Fashion Week gets facelift in 2015

Published
Jan 9, 2015

There will be some big changes in 2015 for New York Fashion Week, which will be held for the last time in February at the Lincoln Center under the banner of "Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week”.

As reported by the American press, the event will have to change its name in September 2015, as Mercedes-Benz, its main sponsor since 2007, has decided to bow out from the event. The result: no longer entitled Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, it will henceforth  simply be known as New York Fashion Week.

Furthermore, WME-IMG, which owns and produces Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, is in negotiations to purchase "Made Fashion Week”, a rival event owned by Mazdack Rassi, Jenne Lombardo and Keith Baptista, who organize fashion shows that are much more financially accessible for designers at Milk Studios in downtown Manhattan during New York Fashion Week. Also, according to the press, the agreement could be finalized by next September.

American Express has also withdrawn from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and will not sponsor shows during its upcoming February edition. The company will, however, continue to support Made Fashion Week.

Another big change announced in December: the week’s move from the Lincoln Center, where it had been based since 2010. The fashion fête apparently disturbed the tranquility of Damrosch Park, where it pitched its tents twice a year.

Following a complaint filed in May 2013 against the City of New York and the Department of Parks & Recreation, who are responsible for Damrosch Park, which is located at the Lincoln Center, the event’s lease, which ran until February 2015, was not renewed following a judicial agreement.

The event will have to hold its shows elsewhere in September 2015. According to the American press, a new, very central location that is being kept tightly under wraps, may have been found.

The ultimate New Year’s resolution for American fashion: the launch of a New York fashion week for men, which may kick off in July, 2015.
