French brand Petit Bateau is looking to give its legendary Breton shirt, also known as the ‘marinière’, a makeover through a new competition asking customers to design ‘tomorrow’s Breton top’.

Open to online users in eight countries, including Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, the UK and Japan, submissions will be open until 29 January.

To participate, design contestants can download a template of the Breton shirt on the brand’s website and choose up to seven colours to reinvent it. A social media vote will select a shortlist of 20 submissions, which will be then considered by a panel of judges including Petit Bateau design director Carole Caufman; Stéphane Wargnier, the brand’s communications and image director; and Petit Bateau brand ambassador, French influencer Jésus Sauvage. In total, three winners will be announced.

The judges will choose three winning designs: one for adults, one for children and one for babies. The winners will receive the chance to meet the brand’s design team at its offices in Troyes, France, as well as a 3,000 euro prize plus a 1,000 euro gift certificate to use in Petit Bateau stores or online.

Additionally, five designs created by international influencers will go on sale alongside those of the three winners. They are designed by jury member Jésus Sauvage (@jesussauvage, 126,000 followers), Japanese influencer Yu Nagaba (@kaerusensei, 155,000 followers), Fredie Harrel from the UK (180,000 followers), Elena Salmistraro (35,100 followers) from Italy, and Elisa from @press_liz (50,300 followers) from Germany.

This is not the first time the brand has launched an online competition to reinvent one of its pieces. Last year, Petit Bateau also asked customers to give its panties a new design to mark their 100th anniversary.
