Philipp Plein to debut partnership with Floyd Mayweather at Saturday's Las Vegas fight

Call it a perfect marriage of runway and ring.

German designer Philipp Plein will debut a long-term partnership with world champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather this Saturday in the American boxer’s Fight of the 21st Century with Conor McGregor.

Their linkup will kick off with a capsule collection to celebrate Mayweather’s 50th professional bout – a one-of-a-kind contest against Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) champion McGregor. Mayweather will enter the ring with in a Philipp Plein custom-made boxing robe and trunks.

The two are by now old buddies; seeing as Plein took his bow at his Frock N Roll show in May in Cannes arm-in-arm with Mayweather, pound-for-pound the greatest fighter of this generation in any division. Down on the Côte d’Azur, “Money” wore a white lizard jerkin featuring colourful dollar bills with fluttering wings.

“I am happy to collaborate with Philipp Plein, he is unique in the fashion world. Like me he works and plays hard, lives the dream, and demands the best,” commented 40-year-old Mayweather, an undefeated boxer and five-division world champion.

The link-up will also include a special capsule selection of clothes available in limited quantities in Plein’s Las Vegas flagship and online on Plein.com. The pair plan to unveil their ideas in the boutique on Friday after the weigh-in and expected eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation with Irishman McGregor at the nearby T-Mobile Arena. Their design partnership is planned to continue over two years and include four exclusive collections that will bear the Floyd Mayweather brand-name across all of Plein’s product lines.

In Vegas, Mayweather’s entire support team will also be dressed in gear by Plein, the hottest new German runway brand this century. However, opinion is split among boxing experts on the bizarre fight, a pay-per-view bonanza expected to generate revenues of $700 million. McGregor, 29, is the first MMA fighter to simultaneously hold titles in two weight divisions. However, as McGregor must fight under boxing rules, critics have likened the fight to a trumpet competition between Miles Davies and Jimi Hendrix.

Nonetheless, Plein insisted: “I applaud Floyd’s winning spirit and have been intrigued by the idea of collaborating together since he joined me on the runway to present my spring/summer 2018 resort fashion show last May. His fashion sense and fearless attitude perfectly match the Philipp Plein mood and lifestyle. I am excited to see what we will work up together.”

Plein is no stranger to the sporting world: since the designer has also dressed AS Roma soccer club; Formula One pilot Nico Hulkenberg and Inter Milan captain Mauro Icardi.
