Italian eyewear manufacturer Safilo has introduced Econyl recycled nylon, derived from plastic waste, in its collections, thanks to a ground-breaking partnership with synthetic fibres producer Aquafil.

Econyl is a recycled and recyclable nylon fibre obtained from plastic waste such as fishing nets and offcuts from synthetic fabrics and industrial plastic, through a process of de-polymerisation and re-polymerisation. “It has the same characteristics as virgin nylon, with no difference in quality, and it can be recycled, recreated and refashioned several times without losing its properties,” said the company.

Econyl has never been used for industrial eyewear production before, and its adoption marks Safilo’s progress as a sustainable manufacturer, and its intention of making green innovation one of its growth drivers.

The new Tommy Jeans eyewear collection launched by Tommy Hilfiger, one of Safilo’s licensed brands, is the first to feature models made using Econyl. Safilo will gradually introduce Econyl in the collections of the other labels in its license portfolio.
