The National Museum of Women in the Arts to hold Rodarte exhibit in 2018

The National Museum of Women in the Arts announced on Friday that it will hold a fashion exhibit devoted to Rodarte as part of its 30th anniversary celebration. The exhibit will be held in fall 2018 and will serve as the finale to the anniversary celebration.

Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy

Susan Fisher Sterling, Director of NMWA, said the museum chose to showcase Rodarte for the “almost artisanal way they produce their work” and how founders Kate and Laura Mulleavy “somewhat go against the grain of having a really huge schedule of shows.”
According to Sterling, the exhibit will be the largest and most in-depth exhibition yet.

Kate and Laura Mulleavy have had their work featured in numerous museums, including the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The sisters held their first solo exhibit, Quicktake: Rodarte, at the Cooper- Hewitt, in 2010 and were the first fashion designers in 20 years to be reviewed in Artforum. LACMA also showcased Rodarte designs at two exhibits, Rodarte: States of Matter, and Rodarte: Fra Angelico Collection, a collection of ten couture gowns, both in 2011.
