TK Maxx reopens online store with daily order limits

Retailer TK Maxx has reopened its online shop following a period of closure due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The discount chain said it has introduced enhanced cleaning and sanitation at its facilities to protect the health and safety of its warehouse workers, and work patterns and layouts have been improved to allow associates to follow the 2 metre rule.

It added that staff will be provided with “the necessary equipment to stay safe”, but did not clarify if this meant face masks, protective visors, gloves or other personal protective equipment.

“Our online store is open and ready to take orders again, and we're hoping it won't be too long before we can re-open our stores,” the department store said.

“While we’re delighted to be taking new orders again online, our top priority is the safety and wellbeing of our associates and customers, so we’ve made some significant changes to the way we work so we can continue to operate our business safely.”

One of these measures is the introduction of daily order limits, with the company capping the number of customer orders it takes each day. On Friday morning, the limit was reached within hours of the site going live, although customers were still able to browse the website.

British retailer Next is also operating with a limited capacity to reduce the number of warehouse colleagues working at any time.

In addition to the operational changes, TK Maxx has announced a series of charitable donations as part of a special £1m Community Fund. Set up by the TK Maxx and Homesense Foundation, the initiative is dedicated to the funding of local grassroots charities which are mobilising in the fight against covid-19.

Additionally, the company has created the Tackle Covid-19 Fund, which will donate a total of £700,000 to European mental health charities and front line medical charities such as NHS Charities Together in the UK and Red Cross in Poland, Germany and Ireland.

Finally, £135,000 has been donated to the British Red Cross Disaster Relief Alliance, which supports global emergency response strategies and is being used to aid those affected by the coronavirus emergency globally.
