Victoria Centre adds new tenants, more to join

Nottingham’s Victoria Centre has announced a number of new tenants that have already opened or will join the former Intu-controlled mall in the months ahead.

They include John Lewis & Partners, which may be closing some of its stores across the UK but has opened a pop-up showroom for its new Anyday range. That's in addition to its existing John Lewis store at the mall. The label covers homewares and furniture only for now but the company has plans to extend Anyday into the clothing sector.

The mall’s management also said that a range of other retailers, including “some of the biggest names in fashion and food”, will be joining.

One of them is footwear giant Skechers, but more fashion-linked names are expected to be unveiled.

A raft of openings at the UK’s major malls is likely in the months to come with plenty of empty spaces after businesses have gone under or gone online-only as a result of the pandemic. The exit from physical retail of names including Oasis, Warehouse, Debenhams and all of the former Arcadia brands has created gaps in mall line-ups. And more closures are expected with Gap, for instance, set to close a number of its UK stores.

But it’s interesting that as well as the fashion-relevant names opening at the mall, many of the other tenants joining are in alternative sectors such as food, banks, homewares, pet care and bikes.

It’s likely in the future that fashion will remain dominant at British shopping destinations but with a diminished presence compared to just a few years ago.
