Yiqing Yin creates costumes for ballet in Florence

Chinese-born designer Yiqing Yin, now based in Paris, has worked on the costumes for a new version of "Tristan & Isolde."

Yiqing Yin designed the costumes for the new ballet which opened this week at the Opera of Florence in the Tuscan capital. "Tristan & Isolde" was choreographed by Giorgio Mancini and based on the original work by Wagner. Yin dressed the star dancers from the Opéra Garnier in Paris, Dorothée Gilbert and Mathieu Ganio, who took the lead roles.

"I like the idea of infusing life and soul into creations through the use of gestures and body language, which finishes the garment: dance as a way to materialize realms of imagination," explained Yin. "The fabrics evolve freely as an extension of their emotions, due to their extreme lightness, they bear witness to an enhanced sense of sensuality but also to a hopeless fragility," she added.

Born in China and raised in France, Yin took home the 2011 'First Collection' Andam prize, the year the main prize went to Belgian designer Anthony Vaccarello. The show will run until January 4. Last year Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci worked on costumes for Marina Abramovic's staging of Maurice Ravel's "Bolero" at the Opéra de Paris.
