New York Fashion Week Men's: What to Expect

Published
Jan 25, 2017

As the A/W menswear shows continue the seasonal European tour, New York’s CFDA, the organization committed to the development of future American design talent, as well as providing support for established designers, is preparing for its biggest season of New York Fashion Week: Men’s to date.  Held from January 30 – February 2, 2017, at Skylight Clarkson North, the upcoming 4th edition of NYFW: Men’s will feature a compelling mix of new, local and returning designers.

This season has proven to be one of many changes and the New York shows will be no exception.  As the industry re-thinks the efficacy of expensive runway shows, weighs the benefits of direct- to consumer, questions the wisdom of selling fall clothes in the summer, and strives for more local manufacturing, the designer community is shifting to more unisex shows, major labels are experimenting with new formats, and emerging brands are finding ways to get themselves noticed on a global stage. Several brands, like Public School have left the menswear calendar in favor of a unisex show during womens’ fashion week in February, for example.

Headlining the week will be designer Raf Simons who will bring his namesake label to New York for the first time. BOSS is joining NYFW: Men’s as well. Ralph Lauren recently announced that he will be showing his purple label in private appointments in his New York showroom. And, New York-based designers, and staples of the New York menswear scene, like Robert Geller, Billy Reid, Patrik Ervell, Rochambeau, Todd Snyder and and Ovadia and Sons return, giving the shows an air of authenticity and local excitement that many have felt that NYFW;M has lacked in past seasons.

One of the most sought after shows of the week will be the NYFW debut of Dimmak, DJ Steve Aoki’s LA-based collection of elevated streetwear, named after the DJs own music label.

NYFW: Men’s  Platform 3, which offers a  selection of emerging designers free exhibition space each season, in partnership with Samsung, will feature the collections of   Jahnkoy, You As by Tony Liu, Bode by Emily Adams Bode, Willy Chavarria, and Matthew Adams Dolan, as well as returning labels Matiere, Garciavelez, Landlord, and N-p-Elliott.
